Ingredients

Bananas Foster Ingredients

  • 4 medium bananas
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 2/3 cup dark brown sugar, packed
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup dark rum
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup chopped pecans, optional
  • 4 scoops vanilla ice cream, for serving

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Bananas: Peel the bananas and slice them into long, thick strips or cut them in half lengthwise. Set aside.
  2. Melt Butter and Sugar Mixture: In a large, deep skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the packed dark brown sugar and cinnamon, whisking constantly until the sugar dissolves completely and the mixture is smooth.
  3. Cook Bananas: Carefully add the banana slices to the skillet in a single layer. Gently stir occasionally until the bananas begin to soften but still hold their shape.
  4. Add Rum and Caramelize: Pour in the dark rum carefully. Swirl the skillet to combine the ingredients. Cook for 1 to 2 minutes, allowing the caramel to thicken and become glossy.
  5. Flambé (Optional): If desired, before adding vanilla, tip the skillet away from you and ignite the rum with an open flame or long lighter to flambé. Allow the alcohol to burn off while carefully shuffling the skillet. Remove from heat after the flames subside.
  6. Finish Sauce: Remove skillet from heat and stir in the vanilla extract and chopped pecans if using.
  7. Serve: When bananas are tender and the sauce is thick and honey-like, serve warm in bowls. Place a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top and spoon extra sauce over the ice cream. Enjoy immediately.

Notes

  • Use dark rum for best flavor; spiced rum can be substituted.
  • Flambéing is optional but adds a dramatic presentation and slightly changes the flavor by burning off the alcohol.
  • For nut allergies, omit pecans or substitute with toasted coconut flakes.
  • This dessert is best served immediately to enjoy the contrast between warm bananas and cold ice cream.
