Ingredients

For the Chicken Patties

  • 1 pound ground chicken
  • 1/2 cup dried bread crumbs (you can use GF bread crumbs)
  • 1 tablespoon Greek yogurt
  • 1 small yellow onion, grated
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon Urfa Biber (or red pepper flakes)
  • Kosher salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • Extra virgin olive oil (about 3 tablespoons total)

To Serve

  • 4 burger buns (or lettuce wraps for low carb/gluten free option)
  • Garlic Aioli
  • Romaine lettuce leaves
  • 1 large tomato, thinly sliced
  • 1 medium red onion, thinly sliced

Instructions

  1. Make the chicken patty mixture: In a medium mixing bowl, combine the ground chicken, 1/4 cup of bread crumbs, Greek yogurt, grated onion, Italian seasoning, and Urfa Biber or red pepper flakes. Drizzle about 1 tablespoon of olive oil over the mixture. Use your hands (wear gloves or wash hands thoroughly afterwards) to mix until all ingredients are well incorporated.
  2. Bread the chicken patties: Spread the remaining 1/4 cup of bread crumbs evenly on a plate. Divide the chicken mixture into 4 large meatballs, then gently roll each in the bread crumbs. Press lightly with your palms to flatten each into a patty about 3/4-inch thick.
  3. Pan-sear the chicken patties: Heat a large cast iron skillet or grill pan over medium heat and brush the bottom with 2 teaspoons of olive oil. When the oil begins to shimmer, place the patties in the skillet without crowding. Cook for 4 to 5 minutes until the bottoms are browned and crispy. Flip the patties and cook for another 3 minutes, or until golden and cooked through.
  4. Build the chicken burgers: Spread a thin layer of garlic aioli on the bottom halves of the buns. Add the cooked chicken patties, then top with romaine lettuce, sliced tomato, and sliced red onion. Finish with the top buns and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Shop this recipe: Visit specialty shops to find quality Mediterranean ingredients like Urfa Biber and extra virgin olive oil to enhance the flavor.
  • Try variations such as substituting pickled red onions for fresh onions or using whipped toum (a 4-ingredient garlic sauce) instead of garlic aioli for a tangy twist.
  • For a low-carb or gluten-free option, use lettuce wraps instead of burger buns and gluten-free bread crumbs.
