Ingredients

For the Casserole Base

  • 6 large Croissants, cut into thirds
  • 1 cup Diced Cooked Ham (or cooked bacon or turkey ham)
  • 2 cups Shredded Cheese (cheddar, Swiss, or choice)

For the Custard Mixture

  • 6 large Eggs
  • 2 cups Whole Milk or half-and-half
  • 1 tsp Dijon Mustard or yellow mustard
  • ½ tsp Garlic Powder
  • ½ tsp Onion Powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste

For Garnish

  • Fresh Herbs (optional, such as parsley or chives)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish to prevent sticking.
  2. Layer Croissants: Cut the croissants into thirds and evenly layer half of the pieces across the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
  3. Add Ham and Cheese: Sprinkle the diced cooked ham evenly over the croissant layer, then add half of the shredded cheese on top.
  4. Top with Remaining Croissants and Cheese: Arrange the remaining croissant pieces on top of the cheese and sprinkle with the remaining shredded cheese to complete the layers.
  5. Prepare Custard Mixture: In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk or half-and-half, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper until smooth and fully combined.
  6. Soak the Bake: Pour the custard mixture evenly over the layered croissants, allowing it to soak for about 15 minutes so the bread absorbs the custard well.
  7. Bake: Place the casserole uncovered in the oven and bake for 30–35 minutes, or until the custard is set and the top is golden brown and bubbly.
  8. Cool and Garnish: Let the casserole cool for about 10 minutes before serving. Optionally, sprinkle with fresh herbs such as parsley or chives for a fresh finish.

Notes

  • Use day-old croissants for better absorption and texture.
  • You can substitute the ham with cooked bacon or turkey ham based on preference.
  • For a richer custard, use half-and-half instead of whole milk.
  • Letting the bake soak for the full 15 minutes is key to letting the custard permeate the croissants.
  • This dish can be prepared the night before and baked in the morning for a convenient brunch option.
