Ingredients

Tea and Spices

  • 3 hibiscus tea bags
  • 1 ginger tea bag
  • 1 chai tea bag (or black tea; for caffeine-free use another hibiscus or ginger tea bag)
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 whole star anise
  • 4-6 whole cloves

Liquids and Sweetener

  • 5 cups filtered water
  • 1 tablespoon keto maple syrup, liquid allulose, or regular maple syrup
  • ¼ cup fresh-squeezed orange juice
  • 1-2 tablespoons fresh-squeezed lemon juice

Garnishes

  • Fresh lemon or orange peel
  • Fresh cranberries
  • Apple slices
  • Cinnamon sticks
  • Sprigs of rosemary

Instructions

  1. Boil Water: Add the filtered cold water to a medium saucepan and bring it to a boil over medium-high heat.
  2. Add Sweetener and Spices: Stir in the sweetener. Tie the tea bag strings together to allow easy removal later, then add all tea bags along with the cinnamon stick, star anise, and cloves to the pot. Reduce the heat to low.
  3. Simmer: Cover the saucepan and simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally to infuse the flavors thoroughly.
  4. Add Citrus Juices: Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in fresh-squeezed orange and lemon juice. Taste the tea and adjust sweetness if desired. For a stronger spice flavor, leave the whole spices in while the tea continues steeping off heat.
  5. Serve and Garnish: Ladle the mulled tea into mugs and garnish with orange slices, orange zest strips, lemon peel, cinnamon sticks, fresh cranberries, or rosemary sprigs for an attractive and flavorful presentation.

Notes

  • You can substitute the chai tea bag with black or additional hibiscus or ginger tea bags for a caffeine-free version.
  • Adjust sweetness according to preference by adding more syrup or allulose.
  • Leaving the spices steeping off-heat enhances the intensity of the warm spice flavors.
  • For added visual appeal and freshness, garnish just before serving.
  • This tea is perfect as a warm winter beverage and also supports immune health due to the antioxidant properties of hibiscus and ginger.
